The Ridley Scott directed film starring Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender conjured up a solid $21.4 million opening day while pacing towards a total first weekend of $55.0 million.
With another newcomer hot on its heels in the runner-up slot, the DreamWorks animated sequel "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" nabbed $20.4 million on Friday while estimated to cap off its opening weekend at the $61 million mark.
Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated totals are last weekend's top grossing motion picture "Snow White and the Huntsman" ($23 million), followed by the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones starring "Men In Black III" ($15 million) and the Joss Whedon directed superhero blockbuster "The Avengers" starring Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth ($12 million).
